Life's a Beach!

Elliot Caswell is delighted with his new Hippocamp wheelchair.

Elliot, from North Shields, has cerebral palsy, and loves to down go the beach with twin brother Lewis, who also has a mild form of cerebral palsy. But because of his disability, Elliot finds it difficult to walk and his mum Chris, says it was almost impossible to wheel him along the beach with the wheelchair he used to have.

So the family turned to the Sunshine Fund for help and applied for a grant to buy a special amphibious wheelchair that is designed to cope with the sand and can fold away easily, and after their application was successful, they got the Hippocamp.

Mum Chris, who used to teach children with disabilities, said: “It is brilliant on the beach. You can push and pull it along the sand which is excellent and it makes things relatively easy.

“As well as that, though, it goes into the water and it floats – which is great for Elliot as well as the rest of the family.”
