The gift of play

Fraser Carr is bouncing with delight after receiving a helping hand from the Sunshine Fund.

Fraser was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a severe muscle-wasting condition, when he was just two. The condition means sufferers lose the ability to walk by the time they are teenagers and now, only at the young age of six, Fraser already has some mobility problems.

His mum said that because of his condition, Fraser is unable to play outside the house as much as he would like, so they applied to the Sunshine Fund for some garden equipment. The family were thrilled when they received a trampoline, climbing frame and swing, and say that having the equipment at home makes a huge difference.

She said, “Fraser has to be at home most of the time and having this is brilliant for him.”

“He has thoroughly enjoyed it over the summer and his two sisters have enjoyed the trampoline as well. And having all the equipment in the garden has encouraged other children to come into the garden and play with him, which is good for his social development.”

“Often we look outside when he’s playing on the equipment and just think, ‘This is what memories are made of’ when he’s laughing and smiling and really enjoying himself.”
