Three-wheeling
A trike donated by the Sunshine Fund has let a boy enjoy his first taste of independence.
Shaun Cassidy is an energetic youngster, but suffers from cerebral palsy. His condition predominantly affects the right-hand side of his body and has forced him to undergo surgery in his hip.
He tried out a trike at Woodlawn School, where he has been a pupil for five years, and loved it so much that his parents knew they had to get one for him.
Not only does Shaun’s trike allow him to use his left leg, which will hopefully improve the strength of his hip, but it also gives him the chance to enjoy a new freedom of movement.
Shaun’s dad said “Shaun was so excited about the trike. The day it was delivered his eyes lit-up as if it was Christmas Day – it was really great to see.”
“Now we can’t get him off it and he’s always got a big smile on his face. The best thing about the trike is that it gives Shaun some independence to get out and about rather than being stuck in a wheelchair – it means he can get on his bike like other boys and girls.”
A visit from ITV Tyne Tees star and Sunshine Fund patron Pam Royle to see him in action helped make it even more special.
