Crafty cash will help youngsters

Youngster’s with disabilities including Down’s syndrome and autism are to benefit from arts, craft and sports equipment provided by the Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund.

The Sunshine fund has provided Adapt in Hexham with the equipment, which will benefit children from the ages of three to fourteen in its adaptability group.

The group meets at a leisure center on Monday nights during term time and is run by two paid members of staff and four volunteers.

At present 13 youngsters use the group each week.

Adapt improves the quality of life of people with disability living in Tynedale and raises awareness issues around disability, with 110 active volunteers on their books.

Alison Lee, sports, physical activity and leisure officer for Adapt, said: “Youngsters aged between three and fourteen will benefit. I think it gives the kids more opportunity to access the equipment and they will be able to develop their skills. It is really good.

“I think the art equipment is great because they can actually design and make something and get completed products at the end.

“The sports equipment is a fantastic way to get them physically active, it is really good stuff.

“Charities such as the Sunshine Fund are good because they are so accessible. You can apply whether you are a large group or an individual.”
