06 December 2009
Hundreds of bearded, red-coated, black-booted Santas embraced the holiday spirit by running, walking and jogging the 4km route through Exhibition Park and Newcastle Town Moor on Sunday 6th December 2009.
The annual Santa Run, this year sponsored by Northumbrian Water, started at 2pm and adults and children of all ages pulled together with the hope to raise over £30,000. for the Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund and Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice, which provides care for infants battling serious – and often terminal – conditions.
Zoe’s Place events co-ordinator, Rachael Bareham, said: “Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice are delighted to be involved with the Santa Run 2009.
“Zoe’s Place provide’s one-to-one respite and palliative care for infants from birth to five years old who have complex needs or life-limiting and terminal illnesses.
“It takes in excess of £850,000 each year to provide care, and we are appealing to everyone to get involved.”
Northumbrian Water provided bottled water to keep the runners hydrated on the day. Jane Morland, corporate responsibility team leader at Northumbrian Water, said: “We’re pleased to be sponsoring the 2009 Santa Run, which will raise much-needed funds for local disabled children and their families.”
Sunshine Fund manager Jo Harris said: “We want to thank all the people that have given up their time to help with this year’s Newcastle Santa Run. It was fabulous to see so many children in Christmas fancy dress and so many adults dressed as Santa.
I would also like to thank Northumbrian Water for sponsoring this year’s run. Their support means that every penny of sponsorship money raised will be donated to help children in the north east”
