Fundraising Fun

10 February 2010

Readers were bowled over by a venture to help sick children at a special charity night. The Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund teamed up with Namco Funscape for their latest cash-boosting event.

Our readers enjoyed an evening of fun at the Metrocentre’s new entertainment complex in the Qube development.

The event was held last night and ticket holders got the chance to grab a glass of bubbly and enjoy a buffet in the bar area before they pulled on their bowling shoes and headed for the alleys.

More than 100 people took part in the game of tenpin, before putting their driving skills to the test and enjoying the thrills and spills of Europe’s fastest dodgem track.

Tickets for the event cost £5, with all the proceeds going towards helping sick children in the North East.

The Sunshine Fund is the Chronicle’s charity and helps improve the lives of sick and disabled children in the region by providing special equipment.

Thousands of our readers raise cash for the charity by taking part in events such as Sunshine Fund Santa Run, Triathlon and Fun Run.

Jo Harris, manager of the charity, said: “The Sunshine Fund loves to give disabled children the opportunity to take part in everyday activities, like playing or riding a bike with other children.

“It is through our readers and events such as this that we are able to carry on supporting those youngsters.

“More than £700,000 worth of equipment has been donated to children in the North East by the Sunshine Fund since we started in 2005 and it is through the vital support and donations from the public that we can continue.

“That’s why we’re so grateful to all our supporters and fundraisers. We can’t thank them enough.”

Last week, three-year-old Maisie Dobson, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was getting to grips with her new pink trike from the Sunshine Fund.

Her condition means she has difficulty moving some of her muscles and joints and the youngster struggles with her balance.

Now, instead of watching other children cycle around the estate where she lives, Maisie can have fun while exercising on the trike.
The exercise will help improve her co-ordination, strength and flexibility.
